Bold compositions and exquisite detailing combine to alluring effect in this oversized wool and silk scarf, inspired by a selection of birds of prey illustrations by John James Audubon. Pictured are drawings of the Iceland Falcon, Swallow-tailed Hawk, Harris's Buzzard, Broad-winged Buzzard, Great Horned Owl, and Snowy Owl.
A naturalist and artist, Audubon traveled extensively throughout the U.S. during the early 1800s, endeavoring to document every indigenous bird species. This task culminated in 1827 with the publication of his Birds of America. Audubon's hand-colored illustrations were rendered through etching, engraving, and aquatint print processes.
Birds of America is part of the General Research Division, whose collections are primarily focused in the humanities and social sciences and include literary and scholarly works from the United States, Latin America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
