Schwarzman Building, has become an iconic edifice offering inspiration and knowledge to all, flanked by majestic marble lions Patience and Fortitude. Amanda Smith’s intricate illustration of the building’s winding staircases, vaulted ceilings, and grand arches captures the beautiful maze-like magic of getting (happily) lost inside one of NYC’s most beloved landmarks.

Designed by John Merven Carrère and Thomas Hastings, NYPL's iconic Beaux-Arts building houses outstanding research collections in the humanities and social sciences. The Library's home since its dedication in 1911, it’s stood for more than a century as an emblem of lifelong learning.
